Every week, we invite a subject matter expert to give advice about their startup expertise. Anyone is welcome to join this meetup, regardless their startup stage.   This week we invited Lizz Whitacre, Founder & CEO of Pawlytics. Lizz is a serial entrepreneur with a serious passion for pets, innovation, and technology. Lizz founded her first company, a non-profit, at 19 to save pets while simultaneously founding a student organization at UNL to connect student volunteers with rescues in Nebraska. From there she worked to open a cat café in Lincoln but realized a pivot was necessary and founded Family Pet Project, a website dedicated to helping pets stay out of the shelter and find new homes. In 2015, Lizz was awarded the Inspire Award for Top Future Business Leader and won 3-2-1 Quick Pitch. In 2017, Lizz won 3-2-1 Quick Pitch again and graduated from UNL with a B.S. in Business Administration specializing in entrepreneurship and innovation. In 2018, Lizz won UNL’s New Venture Competition, completed Start Up School through Y Combinator and NMotion, a business accelerator based in Lincoln. Most recently, Lizz has been accepted as a 2019 Pipeline Fellow

Beyond Statements of Support: Steps That Your Organization Should Take Now
In the wake of the current uprisings and calls to actions many organizations are contemplating what it means for them to truly commit to supporting communities of color. While the world is shining a spotlight on those organizations for boldly condemning anti-Black violence and discrimination; attention is also being given to those organizations who have failed to speak on this current moment or have taken their time doing so. Despite the focus on corporate statements; activists and public intellectuals have been clear in making the point that organizations must not only talk the talk; they need to walk the walk.  This moment is calling for organizations to think beyond statements of support. It asks us to consider what’s next? How do we live out a commitment to not only our Black employees, customers, and vendors but how do we commit to the inclusion and success of all people of color? It asks us to turn the mirror towards ourselves and become aware of the sometimes harsh truths of how our organizations may be failing people from marginalized backgrounds. Now more than ever we are reminded that any lasting change must be rooted in a critical, intersectional, and structural analysis of the personal, political, and the collective.  Join India Pierce, co-founder of Moxie Consultancy Collective, for a discussion about what your organization should do now to cement its commitment to Black people and communities of color at large.

NebraskaProduct | Tyler Hogge
Nebraska Product invites Tyler Hogge to this virtual session as he discusses his philosophy of shifting your PM mindset towards business outcomes. Tyler Hogge is the VP of Product & Strategy at Divvy. He has led product, business development, sales, and customer success teams, and learned from the phenomenal leaders behind Wealthfront, SaaStr, and Andreessen Horowitz.

Tyler Hogge (@thogge) expects a lot from PM's.

From a recent Twitter thread of his:

"Company leaders are desperate for owners. Someone to OWN outcomes. What @rabois calls barrels, and what Frank Slootman calls drivers. Sales does this naturally (the outcome is their number) ...

But I believe PMs should own (or co-own) all business outcomes."

The bedrock of his philosophy is that PMs are the GMs of their product. Now, that’s not a new concept in product circles. But for Hogge, it’s an important starting point. “The main goal for a product manager is not simply to ship software — it’s to deliver business outcomes.

“Whether or not you take anything else from our approach, the most crucial point is that you need to shift your mindset from PMs acting as project managers to becoming outcome-driven if you haven’t already.

This talk with be a further elaboration of his thought process and approach written about recently in First Round Review: https://firstround.com/review/this-vp-is-doing-things-differently-in-the-product-org-heres-his-playbook/
