Nebraska Product invites Tyler Hogge to this virtual session as he discusses his philosophy of shifting your PM mindset towards business outcomes. Tyler Hogge is the VP of Product & Strategy at Divvy. He has led product, business development, sales, and customer success teams, and learned from the phenomenal leaders behind Wealthfront, SaaStr, and Andreessen Horowitz.
Tyler Hogge (@thogge) expects a lot from PM's.
From a recent Twitter thread of his:
"Company leaders are desperate for owners. Someone to OWN outcomes. What @rabois calls barrels, and what Frank Slootman calls drivers. Sales does this naturally (the outcome is their number) ...
But I believe PMs should own (or co-own) all business outcomes."
The bedrock of his philosophy is that PMs are the GMs of their product. Now, that’s not a new concept in product circles. But for Hogge, it’s an important starting point. “The main goal for a product manager is not simply to ship software — it’s to deliver business outcomes.
“Whether or not you take anything else from our approach, the most crucial point is that you need to shift your mindset from PMs acting as project managers to becoming outcome-driven if you haven’t already.
This talk with be a further elaboration of his thought process and approach written about recently in First Round Review:
